Interactive Disaster Mapping

About This Data

This interactive map visualizes billion-dollar weather and climate disasters across the United States from 1980 to 2025. Data is sourced from NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) and includes events where overall damages reached or exceeded $1 billion (adjusted for inflation using the Consumer Price Index).

The map displays 7 disaster types: drought, flooding, freeze, severe storms, tropical cyclones, wildfires, and winter storms. Use the filters above to explore disasters by type, time period, and view either total costs, event frequency, or normalized metrics (cost/year or frequency/year).

Click on any state to view detailed disaster information including event names, dates, costs, and affected areas.
